Critics have regularly equated the notion of baroque with a sense of uneasiness in order to counteract the supposed serenity that would be the prerogative of classicism. However, this ideological use of the history of emotions, intended to defend a supposed French cultural exception, is far from being an isolated case, with the rapprochement of baroque and uneasiness also serving other political purposes, allowing us to trace a history of the ideological uses of the baroque stemming from the question of uneasiness.
